Summary

"The Shadow of Ashlydyat" by Henry Wood is a story set in the early 1900s that takes place in the small town of Prior's Ash, centering on the Godolphin family and their estate. The story focuses on Sir George Godolphin, who is recovering from an illness, his son George, and his daughters, weaving together family ties, social interactions, and local superstitions. The story begins on an autumn day as the town anticipates the start of the fox hunt season. Though still weak, Sir George is there with his son, Thomas, and his daughters, Bessy and Janet, revealing their relationships and personalities. Talk of a ghostly "Shadow" over Ashlydyat brings a mysterious element to the story, suggesting coming bad luck for the Godolphin family; altogether, this mix of family moments, social life, and a hint of ghostly mystery is an exciting background for the drama that is about to happen.
