Hector Graeme

"Hector Graeme" by Evelyn Brentwood is a story about a proud young officer named Lieutenant Hector Graeme in the 1st Regiment of Lancers, who is on leave in England, during the early 1900s. The story starts at Radford Hall, where Hector is shooting partridges with Lucy Caldwell, the host's daughter. The book is about ambition and love and fighting inside oneself. As he and Lucy shoot, their talk shows they like each other but also have problems because of their different social classes. Hector brags about how well he shoots, but Lucy is annoyed by his bragging. The book also suggests Hector is unhappy because of how he grew up and his relationship with his mom. At the end of the first part of the book, Hector suddenly tells Lucy he loves her which could lead to love, wanting to be successful, and maybe problems later on.
