Summary

"In Strange Company: A Story of Chili and the Southern Seas" by Guy Boothby is a story that unfolds in late 1800s Chile, where a man known as Marmaduke Plowden, also going by Marcos Veneda, finds himself entangled in a complicated scheme about money he sent to his uncle back in England. The story, which is told by Luke Sanctuary, plunges into the dangers of a country in civil war. Deceit is everywhere. Plowden navigates a world of spies, hiding his shady past while trying to protect his fortune, all while facing tough choices.

About the Author

Guy Newell Boothby was a prolific Australian novelist and writer, noted for sensational fiction in variety magazines around the end of the nineteenth century. He lived mainly in England. He is best known for such works as the Dr Nikola series, about an occultist criminal mastermind who is a Victorian forerunner to Fu Manchu, and Pharos, the Egyptian, a tale of Gothic Egypt, mummies' curses and supernatural revenge. Rudyard Kipling was his friend and mentor, and his books were remembered with affection by George Orwell.
