Summary

"Muslin" by George Moore is a story that looks into the lives of young women in the late 1800s as they leave the safety of their convent school and enter a world filled with social expectations and romantic possibilities. The story centers on Alice Barton, a thoughtful young woman who, along with her sisters, must navigate the complicated rules of society and relationships. As Alice and her peers prepare for a special prize day at the convent, complete with a play she wrote called "King Cophetua", the story highlights their ambitions, rivalries, and the pressures they face as they transition into adulthood. This opening scene perfectly captures the excitement and challenges these young women face as they begin to confront societal norms and make their place in the world.
