The crimp

"The Crimp" by Henry Leverage is a crime story set in the dangerous world of San Francisco's Barbary Coast. It's a tale of trickery and trying to survive, especially for sailors who desperately need jobs. The story shows a world filled with dishonesty and sadness through the illegal act of shanghaiing by following Captain Gully, who needs to find six men for his whaling ship before it can sail. He asks Abie the Crimp for help, who comes up with a plan that poses as a government detective to trick possible crew members. But things get complicated when Holy Joe, who seems like a preacher, turns out to be a real detective with plans of his own that involves arresting criminals aboard the ship. Everything comes to a head in a moment of truth, questioning identities and blurring the lines between what's legal and what's not.
