"Si Klegg, Book 1" by John McElroy is a story set during the American Civil War with our main character, Si Klegg as the focus. The narrative revolves around Si, a fresh-faced Union Army recruit, and charts his development into a hardened soldier. A mix of funny moments and true-to-life events, we follow Si's challenges and progress. We learn of Si's eagerness as he prepares to go off to war, with a collection of useful and funny things given to him by family and friends as he packs his knapsack. As he starts his training, the novel introduces things like long marches, simple food, and being friends with the other troops as Klegg discovers these things.
