Summary

"The Observers" by G. L. Vandenburg is a science fiction story from the late 1950s. It starts with a normal job at the Army Weapons Development Center but soon turns into a dangerous investigation with spies and aliens. The story probably talks about who we are, when people are dishonest, and how government secrets change our lives. Harry Payne, who hires people at Fort Dickson, needs to find someone to replace George Fisher, a lab tech who killed himself. But when he interviews people who all wear toupees, he gets curious and finds out that aliens called "Galactic Observers" are planning something. Harry finds out these men are aliens trying to learn about Earth's military. Things get intense when Harry is captured by the Observers and has to figure out who he can trust when everyone is lying.
