With Rimington

"With Rimington" by L. March Phillipps is a series of letters detailing the author's time as a captain in Rimington's Guides during the Second Boer War during the late 1800's. The letters capture the struggles and routines of British soldiers in South Africa, filled with the author's own thoughts on the relationships between soldiers, what it means to be at war, and the differences between British and Colonial fighters. The book starts with the author's time at the Orange River Camp, and provides a strong sense of place and his appreciation for the Colonial soldiers he serves alongside. He sets the scene by sharing the men's toughness, and his observations of the land they are marching across, creating a good platform for the challenges they will continue to experience throughout the war.
