Summary

"The Orphan; Or, The Unhappy Marriage. A Tragedy, in Five Acts" by Thomas Otway is a play from the Restoration era focused on love, disloyalty, and outcomes from failing to act. It reveals entanglements between characters and the strong emotions created by family problems and love conflicts. The story is about Castalio, who loves Monimia, the ward of Acasto, but gets mixed up in fights with his brother Polydore. The situation worsens when Castalio and Monimia, who secretly get married, are betrayed by Polydore, who mistakenly thinks he is fighting for Monimia's love, leading to disorder. Conflicts between the brothers result in heartbreaking scenes, causing bad endings for everyone. Monimia, as an orphan caught between love and betrayal, shows the difficulty of having control in a world full of emotional games and rules of society. The last parts of the play share destructive forces of jealousy and how easily human connections can be broken.
