The White Room

"The White Room" by Fergus Hume is a turn-of-the-century mystery set in a peaceful London suburb hiding sinister truths, where Constable Mulligan investigates the killing of a young woman in a luxurious, all-white room. The story kicks off with Mulligan's night patrol, where he's drawn to a strange light and music from a nearby house, Ajax Villa. After meeting a smartly dressed young man who claims his sister is singing inside, Mulligan is tricked into leaving his duties, only to discover the terrible murder within the villa's white room. As the story builds, questions arise about the dead woman’s identity, what led to her death, and the link between the dead woman and the man with the key to the villa.
