Summary

"Skin Game" by Charles E. Fritch is a 1950s science fiction story about Harding and Sheckly, a pair of con artists who journey to alien planets to trick the inhabitants. Their target is a planet of humanoid lizard creatures, where Harding believes their usual scams will work perfectly. However, things go horribly wrong when the aliens misinterpret the con men’s motives and try to "help" them by forcing them to shed their skins, mirroring the figurative idea of conning others. Sheckly's panic underscores the shift from predators to prey, as the story ends with a chilling twist on who is truly deceiving whom.
