Summary

"A Tramp's Sketches" by Stephen Graham is a record of adventures following a man who trades the burdens of town life for the open road in 1913. He shares his soul-searching journey as a "tramp" through the Caucasian and Crimean coasts of the Black Sea, as well as his shared pilgrimage to Jerusalem with Russian peasants. Graham's writing shows how deeply he values living simply and connecting with nature, setting it against the complicated and often stifling world of cities. As he travels, the author shows us the powerful change he felt when he left the city behind. Throughout the essays, Graham looks closely at what it means to live simply, find spirituality, and connect to nature. These themes encourage us to think about what truly matters in life.

About the Author

Stephen Graham was a British journalist, travel-writer, essayist and novelist. His best-known books recount his travels around pre-revolutionary Russia and his journey to Jerusalem with a group of Russian Christian pilgrims. Most of his works express his sympathy for the poor, for agricultural labourers and for tramps, and his distaste for industrialisation.
