Summary

"A Perilous Secret" by Charles Reade is a story set in the nineteenth century that examines the intersections of mystery, family dynamics, and social inequality. It follows William Hope, a gifted but struggling father, as he tries to care for his daughter, Grace, after his wife's passing. Their lives become connected to those of Mary Bartley, a rich child dealing with difficult situations. The story begins with William and four-year-old Grace traveling on foot after the death of William's wife. William is unable to find work and fears losing Grace, who is becoming sick. They face many hardships, like starvation and the search for employment. William discovers coal on Colonel Clifford's land, but the wealthy owner ignores him. This sets the stage for challenges faced by a poor man against the indifference of the rich, foreshadowing the growing connection between the two families.
