Summary

"Pelham — Volume 01" by Edward Bulwer Lytton introduces Henry Pelham, the sole heir to a noble family, as he navigates the intricate web of early Victorian society. The story opens by painting a picture of his upbringing, shaped by his parents' contrasting ideals and opulent lifestyle, leading to comical and intense occurrences that foreshadow his journey. A family embarrassment sheds light on the discrepancies between outward image and hidden truths. Growing up lonely, Henry forms a notable friendship with the thoughtful Reginald Glanville, setting the stage to explore social customs, individual goals, and the often ridiculous nature of upper-class life as Henry enters prestigious institutions like Eton and Cambridge, where he begins to shape his identity.
