Summary

"Swallow: A Tale of the Great Trek" by H. Rider Haggard is a story set in South Africa following Vrouw Botmar as she remembers the journey of Dutch settlers called the Voortrekkers. Facing a wild landscape filled with both the Zulu wars and British colonial rule, the settlers struggled with who they were and where they belonged. Vrouw Botmar opens the story, ready to tell the tale of her great-granddaughter, Suzanne, hinting at a fateful meeting between Suzanne and Ralph Kenzie, an English castaway who may change her life forever.

About the Author

Sir Henry Rider Haggard was an English writer of adventure fiction romances set in exotic locations, predominantly Africa, and a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. He was also involved in land reform throughout the British Empire. His stories, situated at the lighter end of Victorian literature and including the eighteen Allan Quatermain stories beginning with King Solomon's Mines, continue to be popular and influential.
