Summary

"Notes on Nursing: What It Is, and What It Is Not" by Florence Nightingale is a pioneering guide to nursing in the 1800s, particularly for women, that argues that good nursing is more than giving medicine. Nightingale believed that most people who are suffering are that way because of poor nursing. She covers how diseases start and how women can help, emphasizing that creating a clean and comforting space can make people healthier. She teaches that things like fresh air and keeping things tidy can make people feel better and that the role of the nurse is to watch over the patient.

About the Author

Florence Nightingale was an English social reformer, statistician and the founder of modern nursing. Nightingale came to prominence while serving as a manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War, in which she organised care for wounded soldiers at Constantinople. She significantly reduced death rates by improving hygiene and living standards. Nightingale gave nursing a favourable reputation and became an icon of Victorian culture, especially in the persona of "The Lady with the Lamp" making rounds of wounded soldiers at night.
