"Burning Sands" by Arthur Weigall is a story that begins in Egypt during the early 1900s. Lady Muriel Blair finds herself in a strange and unfamiliar society where she meets Daniel Lane, a man who lives a rough existence out in the desert. The story jumps between social standing, self-discovery, and the pull felt between the comforts of regular life and the call of the open wild. We first meet Lady Muriel at a party when she has just arrived to Cairo. She, along with Rupert Helsingham, learns how to navigate this new world. When Muriel meets Daniel Lane, she is struck by how different he is from the privileged people she is used to. Their interaction shows the differences between different social classes and the fight to find one's own freedom, which sets the stage for all that is to come.
