"The Wanderers; Or, Adventures in the Wilds of Trinidad and Orinoco" by W.H.G. Kingston tells the story of the Macnamara family, specifically Guy, Marian, and Arthur, who run from religious trouble and money problems in the United States, finding safety in Trinidad and facing the risks of living in those colonies. Their travels bring them face-to-face with the local government. They deal with their faith as ever-present Inquistion threats loom. At the beginning, the family has to leave their good life in Pennsylvania because of political problems and money troubles. They travel to Trinidad, where their mother sadly passes away; then two priests attempt to put Catholic rituals on her burial. The family then escapes to South America to get away before the Inquisition notices their Protestant beliefs. The start shows the family's issue, their inside battles about faith, and gives a peek at the risks that await them as they try to stay real in a different country.
