Summary

"Poems of Arthur Hugh Clough" by Arthur Hugh Clough is a collection of poems from the 1800s. Clough's poems look at ideas like nature, love, what people should do, religion, and what it means to be human. He uses detailed language to do this. The collection includes personal thoughts mixed with big questions about life, showing how Clough thought about things. The first poems in the book show Clough's deep interest in the world. For example, in "An Evening Walk in Spring," he thinks about how nature is beautiful but his own feelings are troubled and how he saw that beauty and his struggles didn’t mix. Also, "An Incident" tells about a short meeting that makes him feel gentle even though city life can be hard. These early poems show how Clough connects his feelings with the world around him and they reveal how thoughtful and caring he was right from the start.
