Summary

"Miscellanies: Embracing Nature, Addresses, and Lectures" by Ralph Waldo Emerson is a collection from the 1800's full of essays that try to find a connection between nature, what it means to be human, and big ideas. Emerson's writing style looks at nature, promotes independence, and finding your place in the world. The group of writings starts with "Nature," a section where Emerson discusses how people connect with nature and how meaningful it is. He emphasizes that being alone and watching nature are important if you want to learn about yourself and the world around you. Emerson believes that really understanding comes from participating in nature, and that every experience can help you learn about life, how everything is connected, and sets up deeper thinking.

About the Author

Ralph Waldo Emerson, who went by his middle name Waldo, was an American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, abolitionist, and poet who led the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He was seen as a champion of individualism and critical thinking, as well as a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society and conformity. Friedrich Nietzsche thought he was "the most gifted of the Americans," and Walt Whitman called Emerson his "master".
