Summary

"Husks" by Marion Harland is a story set in the late 1800s that follows the Hunt family, especially Sarah and Lucy, as they deal with the demands of their society and their own tough situations. The book looks at ideas such as being poor, showing kindness, and trying to find real purpose when life seems shallow. The story starts on a sad, rainy day in a nice part of town where a girl is trying to sell matches in the bad weather. Sarah is kind to this girl, inviting her into her home to get warm and have something to eat. Sarah is a complicated person: she feels deeply for those who are struggling, but she also has issues with her family, especially her mother, who cares a lot about what society thinks and getting rich since Sarah desires a more meaningful life than her current one.
