Summary

"The Art of War" by Antoine Henri Jomini is a book about military strategies from the 1800s, focusing on how diplomacy and fighting go hand in hand. A well-known expert on war, Jomini breaks down different kinds of battles and rules for military leaders to use as the battlefield changes. The book kicks off by explaining war theories, with the translator sharing the book's importance. Jomini talks about the "art of war," which includes planning, battle moves, and supplies. He stresses that leaders need to get the politics of the war and strategically adjust based on the scenario and troop spirit. This start sets the stage for understanding complicated military situations, showing that winning a war means mixing smart plans with diplomatic awareness.

About the Author

Antoine-Henri Jomini was a Swiss military officer who served as a general in French and later in Russian service, and one of the most celebrated writers on the Napoleonic art of war. Jomini was largely self-taught in military strategy, and his ideas are a staple at military academies, the United States Military Academy at West Point being a prominent example; his theories were thought to have affected many officers who later served in the American Civil War. He may have coined the term logistics in his Summary of the Art of War (1838).
