Summary

"Tales from a Dugout" by Arthur Guy Empey is a war memoir that drops you right into the heart of World War I as seen through the eyes of soldiers hunkered down in the trenches. You'll meet a band of British machine gunners, guys with nicknames like Curly and Happy, who stick together and find ways to laugh and share stories, even when they're facing constant danger near the German front lines. They swap tales and sing songs to keep their spirits up as they deal with the fear and the hard, cold facts of their life. As things get going we learn about the crews unique personalities and the tight bonds they have. The story even introduces a brave little dog named Jim, who becomes their mascot and a symbol of hope and friendship in the middle of all the destruction around them.
