Summary

"Principle in Art, Etc." by Coventry Patmore is a compilation of essays from the late 1800s that studies art, beauty, and analysis, championing a bedrock knowledge of artistic ideas while questioning current analysis. Patmore looks at the link between beauty and truth, stressing the need for real artistic honesty and the role of analysis in improving what people like. The book starts with Patmore thinking about how important good art criticism is, especially against incorrect criticism. He says that good criticism should be based on principles, not just opinions on beauty. Patmore shows the effect that a single, well-principled critique can have on art and how people see it, using stories as examples, and he shows that a smart, informed public is needed to encourage true artistic expression.

About the Author

Coventry Kersey Dighton Patmore was an English poet and literary critic. He is best known for his book of poetry The Angel in the House, a narrative poem about the Victorian ideal of a happy marriage. As a young man, Patmore worked for the British Museum in London. After the publication of his first book of poems in 1844, he became acquainted with members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. After the death of his first wife, Emily Augusta Patmore in 1862, his grief over her death became a major theme in his poetry.
