Summary

"The Man: A Story of To-day" by Elbert Hubbard is a tale from the past that looks at how men and women interacted, what society expected, and one person's search for what it all means. The story follows Aspasia Hobbs, a thoughtful woman looking back at her life, her hardships, and how she came to be. We learn about Aspasia—how she was left behind as a baby and raised by the childless Mr. and Mrs. Hobbs. Growing up, Aspasia wrestles with who she is, what society wants her to be, and the shortcomings of those around her. Through letters, we see her relationships with friends and old coworkers, highlighting the difficulties she has in a world that restricts where women belong, and this leads her toward uncovering her true self.
