Summary

"We" by Evgenii Ivanovich Zamiatin is a story about the struggle for individuality in a future world. Told through the eyes of D-503, a spaceship builder in the United State, the story paints a picture of a world where everyone is the same and freedom is seen as a disease. D-503 starts out proud of his perfectly organized society, one where people are known by numbers and everything is scheduled. As he records his thoughts, readers can see how the United State hopes to force others find "happiness" by spreading their lifestyle to other planets via the Integral Spaceship. However, his world is shaken when he meets the mysterious I-330 and begins to have feelings and ideas he was never supposed to have, this forces him to question the rules and mathematical perfection he once fully believed in, as he now faces how chaotic true emotions are, setting up a battle between order and his need to discover the true meaning of freedom.
