Summary

"Paul Gauguin, His Life and Art" by John Gould Fletcher, is a biography about the life of a famous French artist, Paul Gauguin, and his journey to find meaning and truth. It explores how Gauguin changed as an artist and as a man, showing his choice to leave behind a normal, comfortable life for something more raw and real. The book starts by explaining what France was like when Gauguin was young, mentioning the big changes happening after the French Revolution and how it affected his family. His mother, Flora Tristan, was a strong socialist who fought for what she believed in, and she had a big impact on Gauguin. The early parts of the biography emphasize key moments that shaped him into someone who would challenge the rules and go to far-off places like Tahiti, where he felt he could truly be himself and create art that was honest and free.
