Summary

"The Deaves Affair" by Hulbert Footner is a story set in the early 1900's about a passionate but unsuccessful painter named Evan Weir, who crosses paths with the odd millionaire, Simeon Deaves. When Evan accidentally gets caught up in a plot to blackmail Deaves, he has to find his way through a confusing world of wealth, social class, and doing what's right. At the beginning, the story introduces Evan as a character seeking enthusiasm outside of his art studio. Then, Evan witnesses a crowd ridiculing the cheap old man, Simeon Deaves. When Evan steps in to help Deaves, it sets the scene for Evan’s adventure to discover his purpose in life and to solve the mystery of the Deaves family's secrets. The beginning chapters reveal a funny but intelligent look at what society values, ambition, and the surprising friendships that can develop when things get intense.
