Summary

"Buying a Horse" by William Dean Howells is a funny story that looks at society, set in the late 1800s, about the funny and confusing process of trying to buy a horse. It reflects human nature during these transactions. The tale follows a man who, after moving to the countryside, wants to buy a horse. At first, he is innocent and optimistic, but he soon meets tricky dealers with imperfect horses and questionable ways of selling them. The man slowly gets annoyed as he realizes that buying a horse means dealing with lies, special language, and letdowns. In the end, he finds a horse named Frank, but only after some funny mistakes and learning about trust, ownership, and wishes. The whole experience makes him rethink the world of horse trading.
