Summary

"The Chums of Scranton High Out for the Pennant" by Donald Ferguson is a story about a group of high school friends at Scranton High during the early 1900s who strive to win their baseball league. The story follows team captain Hugh Morgan, his buddy Thad Stevens, and pals Owen Dugdale and "Just" Smith as they get excited to practice for the upcoming championship in the Three Town League, but their start is delayed by rain. When walking home from school, Hugh suggests a trip to Sadler Farm for fresh butter, which results in a surprise meeting with Wandering Lu, a homeless man. The boys learn about Wandering Lu's past while he seeks to reconnect with his long-lost sister, and are kind to him. The initial chapters introduce a youthful enthusiasm for baseball, friendship, and human compassion by displaying acts of kindness to those in need.
