Summary

"A Belated Guest (from Literary Friends and Acquaintance)" by William Dean Howells is a captivating peek into the late 1800s literary world. The story tells of the author's experiences with important writers, focusing on the time he spent with the popular Bret Harte. Through warm storytelling, Howells lets us see Harte's interesting personality and shares the fun of having him as a houseguest for a week. Harte, known for his California stories, could be a bit disorganized but always charmed everyone he met. Howells thinks back on their talks, Harte's smart insights, and his slightly teasing way of looking at literary traditions and famous people, showing us the ups and downs of literary recognition and friendship.
