Summary

"Visits to Monasteries in the Levant" by Robert Curzon is a 19th-century travelogue where the author journeys through the Levant, bringing to life the monasteries he finds and the people he interacts with. Starting with the spark of inspiration found among ancient family manuscripts, the book recounts Curzon's time in Alexandria, Egypt, vividly depicting the city with its scorching heat and the day-to-day lives of its diverse inhabitants, ranging from water carriers to Bedouins. These initial experiences set the stage as Curzon begins his exploration of remote monasteries, offering readers a rare glimpse into the hidden history and unique lifestyle within these secluded religious communities that few outsiders ever saw.

Robert Curzon, 14th Baron Zouche, styled The Honourable Robert Curzon between 1829 and 1870, was an English traveller, diplomat and author, active in the Near East. He was responsible for acquiring several important and late Biblical manuscripts from Eastern Orthodox monasteries.
