Summary

"Witness for the Defence" by A. E. W. Mason is a story about a young lawyer named Henry Thresk, and his journey involving love, career goals, and family pressure within England. The novel starts with Henry, and how his mother always reminds him that he needs the family's help, which makes him determined to become a barrister. While trying to climb the career ladder, Henry goes on vacation to Sussex, meets Stella Derrick, and they start to fall for each other, which creates tension as their relationship grows more mysterious as the book moves forward. As Thresk gets back to his everyday job, he thinks about how his history might affect his future, especially with the possibility of him getting back together with Stella.
