"Colonel Quaritch, V.C.: A Tale of Country Life" by H. Rider Haggard is a story set in the late 1800s that touches on themes of remembrance, societal standing, and how complicated living in the countryside in England can be. The story is about Colonel Harold Quaritch, a soldier who recently retired and is trying to deal with his past and present by settling in Honham Cottage, which he got from his dead aunt. As he starts his new life, he thinks a lot about Ida de la Molle, a woman he met before, and starts to understand the local society and the de la Molle family's history. At the start of the book, Colonel Quaritch is thinking about where he is and what he's done with his life. We find out that he's back from being in the military, with memories of wars and how he feels about Ida, the local squire's daughter. When he gets there, he meets the squire, who invites him to dinner, which starts their growing friendship. As Quaritch thinks about being alone and the financial problems of landowners, he realizes the de la Molle family is having problems, especially with their money running out and possibly losing their family home. The linked stories of Quaritch growing as a person and the local family's difficult situation suggest a journey through love, loss, and the weight of the past.
