Summary

** "Beauchamp's Career – Complete" by George Meredith is a story set in a restless England during the late 1800s, following the journey of Nevil Beauchamp who is a young idealist. The story pulls you into Nevil's world as he tries to deal with what it means to be honorable and loyal to his country during times of military and social tension. The book starts by showing the nervous political mood in England, where people are worried about a possible attack from other countries, and we meet Nevil who intensely wants to defend his homeland. As Nevil talks with characters, like his uncle Everard and Mrs. Rosamund, we see just how hopeful and driven he is to fight any sign of weakness that he sees in society. This sets the scene for Nevil's growth and the many disagreements he will face as he tries to reconcile what he believes in with the realities of the world. **

About the Author

George Meredith was an English novelist and poet of the Victorian era. At first, his focus was poetry, influenced by John Keats among others, but Meredith gradually established a reputation as a novelist. The Ordeal of Richard Feverel (1859) briefly scandalised Victorian literary circles. Of his later novels, the most enduring is The Egoist (1879), though in his lifetime his greatest success was Diana of the Crossways (1885). His novels were innovative in their attention to characters' psychology, and also portrayed social change. His style, in both poetry and prose, was noted for its syntactic complexity; Oscar Wilde likened it to "chaos illumined by brilliant flashes of lightning". Meredith was an encourager of other novelists, as well as an influence on them; among those to benefit were Robert Louis Stevenson and George Gissing. Meredith was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature seven times.
