"Guy Mannering; or, The Astrologer — Complete" by Walter Scott is a story about a young English gentleman named Guy Mannering who goes on a journey through England and Scotland, where he interacts with different types of people and deals with ideas about fate, astrology, and the supernatural. The novel begins with Mannering traveling after finishing his studies, but he gets lost in a rough, swampy area and looks for shelter in a village named Kippletringan. Eventually, he finds help from a local woman who directs him to Ellangowan, an estate owned by Mr. Godfrey Bertram. When he gets there, the stage is set for mysterious and astrological events, that influence Mannering's journey and the lives of others. His arrival builds an atmosphere of uncertainty and adventure.

About the Author

Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet, was a British novelist, poet and historian. Many of his works remain classics of European and Scottish literature, notably the novels Ivanhoe (1819), Rob Roy (1817), Waverley (1814), Old Mortality (1816), The Heart of Mid-Lothian (1818), and The Bride of Lammermoor (1819), along with the narrative poems Marmion (1808) and The Lady of the Lake (1810). He had a major impact on European and American literature.
