Summary

"Seven Mohave Myths" by A. L. (Alfred Louis) Kroeber is a mid-20th century study of the Mohave Indians' myths, revealing their civilization, traditions passed down by story telling, and method for how they deliver their stories. This collection keeps alive key stories from the Mohave, all created with unique song formats, that reveals a sense of the history and understanding of their world. The introduction explains these tales' important impact on Mohave life. These stores serve more then just retellings; they serve a purpose of teaching and ceremony. Many of the stories stem from the dreams and actual life of the storytellers. For example, the saga of "Cane" tells the story of two brothers, Pukehane and T{sh}it{sh}uvare, and their journey as they deal with personal battles and family dynamics shaped by their society. The text shows the complexities of the oral tradition, and how the story telling techniques contribute to their role as artifacts of their civilization.
