Summary

"The History of Rome, Books 09 to 26" by Livy is a chronicle from the late 1st century BC that plunges into critical chapters of Roman history, primarily the clashes with the Samnites during the Second Samnite War, where bravery, shame, and the unpredictable nature of war take center stage. Initially, it highlights the intense struggle at the Caudine Forks, narrating how Roman consuls Titus Veturius and Spurius Postumius see their army encircled by the Samnites, detailing the soldiers' despair and the humiliating treaty that forces them to surrender by marching under the yoke. The narrative presents the negotiations, battle plans, and the far-reaching effects of the defeat as examples of honor and disgrace in combat, paving the way for a Roman comeback that pivots the war. Throughout this section, important characters rise to prominence, such as the resolute Roman generals and the astute Samnite leader Herennius Pontius, revealing the intricacies and human side of historical warfare.

About the Author

Titus Livius, known in English as Livy, was a Roman historian. He wrote a monumental history of Rome and the Roman people, titled Ab Urbe Condita, ''From the Founding of the City'', covering the period from the earliest legends of Rome before the traditional founding in 753 BC through the reign of Augustus in Livy's own lifetime. He was on good terms with members of the Julio-Claudian dynasty and was a friend of Augustus, whose young grandnephew, the future emperor Claudius, he encouraged to take up the writing of history.
