Summary

"The Explorer" by W. Somerset Maugham is a story set around the turn of the century; it follows Lucy Allerton as she tries to overcome her family’s fall from wealth caused by her dad's poor choices. Lucy remembers the good times at her family's estate and is determined to bring back her family's honor and take care of her younger brother, George. At the beginning, we find Lucy on a lonely beach, thinking about her difficult past and the likely loss of everything her family once had. The author shows us her thoughts about the ocean and her strong connection to the area. As the story progresses, Lucy works hard to keep her family's home despite her father's carelessness with money and the pressures of society. The opening sets the scene for a touching examination of identity, loss, and the ability to recover as Lucy faces the difficulties of both her family's financial trouble and her plans for the future.

About the Author

William Somerset Maugham was an English writer, known for his plays, novels and short stories. Born in Paris, where he spent his first ten years, Maugham was schooled in England and went to a German university. He became a medical student in London and qualified as a physician in 1897. He never practised medicine, and became a full-time writer. His first novel, Liza of Lambeth (1897), a study of life in the slums, attracted attention, but it was as a playwright that he first achieved national celebrity. By 1908 he had four plays running at once in the West End of London. He wrote his 32nd and last play in 1933, after which he abandoned the theatre and concentrated on novels and short stories.
