Summary

"A Bankrupt Heart, Vol. 1" by Florence Marryat is a 19th-century novel exploring the life of Miss Ellen Llewellyn, a housekeeper for Lord Ilfracombe, and the conflicting emotions she experiences while working for him. Torn between her growing affection for the Lord and her family connections, Ellen also deals with her concerns about his friend, Mr. Sterndale. The unexpected arrival of her sister and brother-in-law further stirs up her past, while the presence of Mr. Portland reminds her of societal factors that threaten her bond with the earl. This early part of the book shows Ellen's inner turmoil and the beginning of the challenges she faces as she tries to find her way in love and life.
