Summary

"Life of Adam Smith" by John Rae is a biography that paints a picture of Adam Smith's world, from his childhood to his early career, showing how he became a major figure in economics and philosophy. The book starts with a look at what others had already written about Smith, building on earlier accounts to give readers a fuller understanding of his life. It points out the important people who guided Smith early on, like his family and teachers, who helped him grow into a smart scholar. Early education shaped Smith’s thinking; the book shares key moments from his time in Kirkcaldy and at Glasgow College, revealing how these experiences set the stage for his groundbreaking ideas about economics.

About the Author

John Rae was a Scottish journalist and biographer. The long-time editor of The Contemporary Review, and contributor to The British Quarterly Review, he became famous for his 1895 biography of Adam Smith, Life of Adam Smith, which replaced the Biographical Memoir of Adam Smith of 1811, by Dugald Stewart, as the standard Smith reference.
