Summary

"The Lonesome Trail" by John G. Neihardt is a collection of linked stories set in the American frontier, focusing on Antoine, a mixed-race man grappling with identity and acceptance. He is an outcast navigating a world where he doesn’t fully belong, facing challenges from nature and society alike. Antoine finds himself running from pursuers at the start of the story. He is haunted by past transgressions and the prejudice he faces as a half-breed, which has left him estranged from both white and native communities. His unexpected bond with a wolf named Susette gives him companionship, but also highlights his yearning for connection in a desolate existence. The story uses a tone of desperation and conflict to suggest the main themes of identity, survival, and the need for belonging.
