Summary

"A Dog's Tale" by Mark Twain is a touching story about a dog named Aileen Mavourneen, who learns about life and loyalty from her educated mother before being sold to a new family, where she quickly grows attached to the children. Her bravery shines when she rescues a baby from a fire; however, her heroic deed is misunderstood, leading to fear and injury when her master mistakenly punishes her. Tragedy strikes when her puppy dies during a heartless experiment, causing Aileen to question her mother’s lessons on self-sacrifice and highlighting the challenging realities of being a dog and showing the sometimes sad relationship of humans and animals. Through Aileen's journey, the story explores the complex nature of loyalty and criticizes human errors in how animals are often treated.
