Summary

"The Helpful Hand of God" by Tom Godwin is a science fiction tale of morality and resistance in a colonized world. Set in a future where the Vogarian State seeks to exploit the planet Sanctuary and its peaceful inhabitants, the story follows Commander Y'Nor's attempts to extract resources from the Saints, led by Father Brenn. Pressured to comply with Y'Nor's demands to save his people, Brenn unwittingly sparks a sense of unity between the oppressed workers and the Vogarian guards. The transformation of Kane, a character wrestling with his conscience, becomes important as he rejects his commander's brutality and chooses to stand with the Saints. Ultimately, the narrative culminates in an act of defiance against the Vogarian State's tyrannical rule, revealing the power of human connection and compassion in the face of oppression.
