Summary

"English Hours" by Henry James is a series of essays that capture the author's experiences and thoughts while traveling through England during the 1800s. The book explores English landscapes, traditions, and communities through James's unique perspective. It kicks off with a look back to his first visit to London, where he vividly recalls landing on a wet Sunday and feeling a mix of amazement and apprehension about the city's traditional appeal. James compares this charm with his American background. He portrays the city's immense size, challenging nature, and special qualities and reflects on how it made him feel as someone new to England, which serves as the start for his adventures in the other essays.
