Summary

"The Lovely Lady" by Mary Austin is a story about a young man named Peter facing tough times, stuck with family duties and a big mortgage. He dreams of getting rich and finding love. The story starts with Peter thinking about how hard his life is and how his family interacts. Even though they can't really enjoy it because they don't have enough money, Peter is talking excitedly to his sister Ellen as they prepare for their picnic. Peter pictures himself as a knight fighting a dragon, which represents his mortgage and the financial troubles that weigh down his family. The story begins to set up a theme of longing and aspiration, as Peter contemplates the meanings of wealth, love, and his obligations while yearning for a much better future.
