Summary

"The Golden Age" by Kenneth Grahame is a reflective story that explores childhood memories and relationships. The story focuses on children who spend their days exploring nature and using their imaginations to embark on grand adventures, while also looking at their interactions with the adults in their lives, who they see as distant and uninteresting. The story shows the contrast between the imaginative freedom of childhood and the more ordinary and restricted world of adults. Throughout the story, the children create their own magical world through games and make-believe, as they find joy and freedom away from the realities of adult life. The beginning of the book sets a tone of both fondness and a little bit of sadness for the simple, carefree days of youth.

About the Author

Kenneth Grahame was a British writer. He is best remembered for the classic of children's literature The Wind in the Willows (1908). Scottish by birth, he spent most of his childhood with his grandmother in England, following the death of his mother and his father's inability to look after the children. After attending St Edward's School in Oxford, his ambition to attend university was thwarted and he joined the Bank of England, where he had a successful career. Before writing The Wind in the Willows, he published three other books: Pagan Papers (1893), The Golden Age (1895), and Dream Days (1898).
