"Self-Raised; Or, From the Depths" by Emma Dorothy Eliza Nevitte Southworth is a story about a person named Ishmael and what happens in his life. After a tough time when he and his special person, Claudia, break up, Ishmael feels really sad. But, his good friend Bee is always there for him, showing him love all the time. As Ishmael gets better, he puts his heart into his work and thinks about moving up in his job. This part of the story looks at how people care for each other, staying true to one another, and trying to decide between old feelings and new ones, especially when Ishmael has to figure out what he feels about Claudia and Bee.
