Summary

"New-Englands Plantation" by Rev. Francis Higginson is an early 17th-century record that paints a picture of the Massachusetts Bay Colony through the eyes of its settlers. Higginson's writing invites people from England to come live in the new colony by describing what it's like, both the good and bad parts. The story begins by setting the scene around 1630, giving an overview of Higginson's reasons for writing. Then, the book goes into detail about the New England land itself, talking about the dirt, weather, plants, and animals, as well as the politics and the native people who already lived there. Higginson makes sure to point out how much the new land has to offer settlers, but he also warns them about the challenges of dealing with nature and making a life in a new place.
