Summary

"The Provost" by John Galt is a story that looks at how people lead and communities work, as seen through the eyes of Mr. Pawkie, a man determined to climb the social ladder in the town of Gudetown. It begins with the widow of a previous Provost, Mrs. Pawkie, who thinks her late husband's writings about his time as mayor should be shared with the world. After she is convinced to publish it, the story focuses on Mr. Pawkie himself as he shares how his smart choices and desire for a better life helped him gain importance in his town. As he enters the world of politics, he tries to find a middle ground between what is expected of him as a leader and the everyday realities of dealing with people, creating a tale of character and ambition in a small-town setting.
